Cyclone enters Pakistan with heavy rainfall
Posted on Jun 5th, 2010 under "Pakistan" KARACHI: Tropical cyclone Phet has entered in Pakistan and will landfall at Sindh coast on Sunday.
The cyclone Phet has downgraded from a cyclone to category I storm.
The storm has entered in Pakistan below the Makran coastal belt. The met department has issued warning 10 for the storm. “The speed of the cyclone rising due to high tides and it will landfall at Sindh coast tomorrow,” the weatherman said.
He said the rainy spell in Karachi can start at any time today.
The cyclone will generate the waves as high as three to five meters.
Authorities in coastal regions are preparing for high winds and possible flooding and destruction from an approaching tropical storm.
The National Disaster Management Authority said Saturday that 7,000 people have been moved to safety from low-lying areas close to the southern city of Karachi.
The meteorological office says the storm is expected to make landfall in Pakistan early Sunday with winds of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour. About 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) of coastline could be affected.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Cyclone Warning Center, the direction of the cyclone is towards the north-east, which is the location between Karachi and Pasni.
The downpours that started yesterday in various coastal areas of Balochistan have triggered flash flood in streams and brooks, causing several mud houses to collapse.
Meantime, the evacuation of people to the relief camps is still in progress in Sindh’s coastal areas.
The low-lying areas in Balochistan coastal region including Gwadar, Jiwani, Pasni and Turbat came under rainwater with Jiwani the worst hit with 165 millimeter of rains followed by Gwadar with 143 mm rains.
Makran Coastal Highway road link is cut off with areas including Gwadar and Turbat and also Turbat is cut off from Gwadar and Pasni.
Hundreds of boats moored at Gwadar’s port were hit by the furious sea waves.
